Thanks for attending / being interested in, the first maths meeting of the Bendigo Maths Network
Formal Minutes of the maths meeting will follow but to recap :
The network is formed for maths teachers, to address anything to do to with maths teaching, and in particular
(1) [Content]: Some staff feel that they are asked to teach maths without a sufficient grounding in the content / approaches – can we address this, provide PD etc?
(2) [Pedagogy] some staff who have good content knowledge are unsure about potential and impact of new approaches that are being discussed (different groupings, project based learning, rich tasks, team teaching). What are the best ways to (possibly) broaden and/or deepen teaching?
the Bendigo education plan may intensify these issues – so there is an opportunity for maths staff to be proactive about how their discipline moves into this framework, preserves and adopts best practice, so that the best outcomes for students are delivered.
No agenda is imposed on the discussion (this is a genuine discussion).
[There is some coordination from cluster and regional roles, some research with Latrobe uni staff – but math teachers driving it. Good to see staff from primary thourgh to senior secondary, deptartment and non department schools, present at the first meeting.]
In the first meeting, Dean and Lucy presented an outline of some current approaches at KFSC, including team teaching and open ended tasks. This was an excellent reflective presentation which inspired some, while provoking discussion and debate for others.
A SWOT format was used to discuss some of these issues in the first meeting.
The diversity of responses (feedback_) is typical of the discussion that needs to occur.
